Insulation degradation evaluation test

What is an insulation degradation evaluation test?

Insulation degradation evaluation tests are used to evaluate how the insulation performance of electrical equipment and electrical insulating materials deteriorates over time and under environmental conditions.
Evaluating this is very important because as insulation degradation progresses, electrical isolation performance can deteriorate, potentially causing equipment failure and safety issues.

Main purpose of insulation degradation evaluation test

Maintain insulation performance

To ensure the long-term safety and reliability of your equipment, check how insulating materials degrade over time.

Life Span Prediction

Predicts the service life of insulating materials and equipment and determines when to maintain or replace them.

Confirmation of safety

Ensure that the product is safe to use even if it deteriorates.

Types of insulation degradation evaluation tests

Insulation resistance measurement

Measure the insulation resistance of insulating materials and equipment to evaluate degradation over time and under changing environmental conditions.
A decrease in resistance value indicates that insulation performance has deteriorated.

dielectric breakdown test

The degree of deterioration is evaluated by applying high voltage to check the breaking strength of the insulating material.
If the breakdown voltage is reduced, the insulating material is considered to be deteriorated.

partial discharge test

Inspects for partial discharge inside the insulation to detect signs of deterioration at an early stage.
If partial discharge is detected, insulation performance may be beginning to deteriorate.

Accelerated degradation test

Tests are conducted under severe conditions such as high temperature, high humidity, and vibration to evaluate how insulating materials deteriorate in a short period of time.
This test predicts the long-term durability of materials and equipment.

Voltage application test

Apply voltage over a long period of time to investigate how insulating materials degrade.
This test can confirm the long-term electrical stability of the material.

Effects of insulation degradation

As insulation degradation progresses, the insulation performance of the equipment deteriorates, increasing the risk of electrical failures and short circuits.
In the worst case, it may lead to serious accidents such as destruction of equipment or fire. To prevent this, periodic insulation degradation evaluation tests are necessary.

Features of IMV Tests and Solutions

We can carry out vibration and shock tests on behalf of our customers, develop test conditions and assist with countermeasures in the event of failure.

We are always available to help you with the following requests and problems

  • You do not know how to determine the test conditions.
  • There is no problem in the field even though the test has failed.
  • Want to reproduce a failure that occurred in the field, but the test does not show the same failure mode.
  • The customer has presented us with test conditions, but you do not know what to do.
  • Wants to review whether the existing test method is appropriate.
  • If a problem occurred in the test, was it solved with a single design change?
  • Want to design a product with the vibration/shock environment in mind from the development stage.

Vibration and shock testing requires a high level of expertise and extensive experience, but it is quite costly to train and maintain such specialists in each company. One solution is to outsource various vibration-related issues. The IMV Test Lab has a number of solutions, so feel free to contact us for more information.
