Health assessment measurements of large bridges

  • Measurement test case study
  • Earthquake resistance

Requests

The bridge is in need of repair due to water penetration and noticeable deterioration of its appearance caused by surface cracks due to ageing.
The customer would like to analyse what vibrations the bridge is subjected to and how the surface cracks are behaving by measuring them over a 24-hour period.

Analysis details

A 24-hour continuous measurement system was constructed to measure acceleration, temperature, humidity and strain.
Changes in traffic and acceleration values at different times of the day were revealed, as well as the behaviour of cracks.
The damping rate (in hours) at each natural frequency of the bridge was also calculated.
